UN mission studies situation in Venezuela accused Nicolas Maduro’s government of plunging the country into a “climate of fear” in which anyone can become a victim of the repressive apparatus, to such an extent that the evidence already confirms a certain level persecution amounting to crimes against humanity.

The Independent International Fact-Finding Mission stated that Chavista leader ‘dramatically’ steps up repression to ‘crush’ any hint of dissentin an escalation that reached new heights after the July 28 presidential election, which led to the ouster of the main opposition candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia.

During the period leading up to these elections, from December 2023 to March 2024, At least 48 people have been arrested on suspicion of plotting against the government and in July of this year alone, more than 120 people were taken into custody as part of the opposition election campaign.

After the elections, Authorities have made more than 2,000 arrests in a few weekswhich in turn led to violations of due process and confirmation that the entire judicial system, headed by the Supreme Court (TSJ) “is clearly subordinated to the interests of the executive power and serves as a key instrument in its plan to suppress all forms of political and social opposition,” according to the report.

Venezuela is immersed in “one of the most serious human rights crises in modern history”to the extent that the abuses already documented, including cases of politically motivated persecution (a type of crime against humanity), “are not isolated or random acts” but are part of “a sustained and coordinated plan to silence, obstruct and suppress the opposition.

President of the Fact-Finding Mission Marta Baliñas, condemned the “strengthening of the repressive apparatus” despite “numerous” calls from within Venezuela as well as the international community.

Already before the elections Maduro and other senior Chavista officials have warned of a possible bloodbath if they fail to achieve victory. Another expert of the group, Francisco Cox, recalled that the mission itself was already concerned that the government could “use its repressive apparatus” in the context of the elections. “And this is exactly what we are seeing now,” he added.
