Over the summer, Iranian cyber activists sent emails to people involved in President Joe Biden’s election campaign with the message Materials stolen from Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s campaignas part of efforts to influence the Nov. 5 election, U.S. agencies said Wednesday.

“Additionally, malicious Iranian cybercriminals have continued their efforts since June to send stolen and classified materials related to former President Trump’s presidential campaign to U.S. media organizations,” the FBI, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said in a joint statement.

The department did not provide more detailed information about the nature of the stolen materials.

Iran has previously denied interfering in the US elections.

Iran’s permanent mission to the United Nations in New York did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.

In August, the United States accused Iran of conducting cyber operations against the campaigns of two U.S. presidential candidates and of attacking American society through influence operations aimed at fomenting political discord.

The attackers sent unsolicited emails to people involved in the Biden campaign in late June and early July that contained excerpts from stolen Trump campaign materials as text within the emails, according to a statement Wednesday.

Biden dropped out of the White House race on July 21 and was subsequently replaced by Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.

The Trump campaign said in a statement that Harris and Biden must disclose whether they used the material “to harm” President Trump.

“We are not aware of any materials being sent directly to the campaign,” a Harris campaign spokesman said in a statement. “Several people were targeted in their personal emails with what appeared to be spam or phishing attempts.” (Reuters)
