Over the past few days, there has been a rumor that Microsoft might be considering abandoning the Xbox Series S, but that’s something that doesn’t make sense. A move of this type would be a big mistake on the part of the Redmond giant, and it’s also something that right now cannot allowand I’ll explain why.

Microsoft doesn’t split Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X sales for a good reason, because the former sold far more than the latter. We don’t have specific data, but latest estimates they said the Xbox Series S represents more than 70% of salesand that the Xbox Series X might not even reach 30%.

If Microsoft decides to end support for the Xbox Series S would pull its best-selling console off the marketwith all that would mean in terms of game sales and key services like Xbox Game Pass. But that’s not all, the company would also be betraying those who trusted it by buying the said console and that would make things even more difficult in the next generation console war.

Why the Xbox Series S was so successful

Xbox Series X and Series S sales figures as of September 2023 thanks to a leak that happened some time ago.

Basically, because it is a console with all the conveniences of the new generation at a very economical price, and because it had good availability during the launch phase, in which the prices of the Xbox Series X and PS5 were inflated. Without a doubt, price was a great engine driving the sales of this console.

In terms of performance, it offers an excellent experience compared to the previous generation thanks to the Zen 2 CPU and SSD drive, although it is true that it is limited by 10 GB of unified memory and a GPU with only 1,280 shaders. It was conceived as a 1080p machine and It delivers on that promise, but with a change in scale.

The Xbox Series S was successful because covered a very specific market nichethat is, those who cannot spend more than 300 euros on a console, but want a “next generation” experience. Those who can afford the Xbox Series X got carried away and in most cases preferred to invest their money in the PS5.

I remember that the Xbox Series S is available for less than 189.99 euros and It’s a really good buy for the money. Many developers complained about the console’s lack of performance, but the truth is that Microsoft allowed many gamers with limited resources to enjoy a next-gen experience that was out of their budget with the Xbox Series PS5, and showed that sometimes less is more.

Its weight is so great that in fact Microsoft considered intergenerational renewal of this console with artificial intelligence, but it was eventually canceled, as well as the Xbox Series X Pro project, which also did not see the light of day.
