How to choose computer speakers

The first thing we need to be clear about is the use we are going to give them and what we expect from them. If we are going to use them occasionally and don’t mind if the quality is average, we can save a lot of money and the truth is that there are affordable options with a good quality-price ratio. On the other hand, if we are looking for something really good, with power and sound quality, we have plenty of options, albeit at much higher prices.

One mistake we should not make is to think that the greater the capacity in Watts or the power in general, the better the speakers will be. What we really need to look at is RMS power.

RMS power is how long we can listen to sound at the maximum supported volume without damaging the speakers (or our ears). It’s a complex mathematical formula that measures power used versus time. When it comes to PC speakers, when we talk about RMS, we’re talking about individual channels.

For normal home use, A good option would be 2.0 speakersbut we can always go for more complex configurations like 2.1, 5.1 or 7.1, which are in principle more geared towards entertainment. Another factor to consider is whether we are going to place them in a normal room or a large room like a large living room, a meeting room, etc. The larger the room, the more powerful and larger speakers we will need.
