Remote Desktop is disappearing and will be replaced by the Windows app as an alternative for streaming Windows 11 to devices.
Microsoft’s new Windows app provides a central platform for connecting to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and other Windows services. Microsoft already released a preview version of the Windows app late last year. The application offers users a consistent experience when connecting to various Windows services such as Remote Desktop and Microsoft Dev Box through a single app.
The app supports features such as customizable home screens, multi-monitor configurations, and USB redirection. IT administrators benefit from improved security and easier management, while end users can customize their work environment to their own preferences.
Additionally, the app introduces new features such as easy account switching, integration with Microsoft Teams, and improved performance for remote sessions via the Relayed Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) Shortpath to further optimize the user experience on both desktop and mobile devices.
Switch to the Windows app
The introduction of the Windows app marks the transition from legacy Remote Desktop clients to this new platform. The app can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store, Apple App Store and Google Play, or accessed directly via web browsers.
The Windows app is only available for work and school accounts and is focused on existing Remote Desktop customers. IT administrators who use Remote Desktop today can find out more here to help make the transition to the Windows app as smooth as possible.
The Windows app is now generally available for Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and web browsers, with a public preview for Android.
