As reported by Android Police, the bug may have been present between Google Photos versions 6.93.0.657009179 and 6.95.0.663027175, or about a month.

Over the last few hours, Google has made it public in its help section that it has been working on this bug for a while now, where Photos leaves the query blank and doesn’t provide results even if there are examples that match the search terms. It also explains that other people are aware of it, too. They got results but they did not match not at all with search parameters.

Besides thanking people who sent feedback to report the issue, the most important thing is, Google says it has already fixed this problemso Search in Photos now works as it should, even using the terms in the captions.
