Heavy rains hit Ishikawa PrefectureOne person has died and 10 are missing in central Japan, Japanese authorities said Saturday.

The worst hit area was the Noto Peninsula, a region that was hit hard by an earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale on New Year’s Day.

On the peninsula, one person was killed in the city of Suzu and 10 were missing in the city of Wajima, some of them swept away by flooded rivers and others buried in landslides, according to local authorities quoted by the Kyodo news agency.

Wajima registered early Saturday. 120 millimeters of precipitation per houra record figure, as far as records go.

The Ishikawa Prefectural Government is also talking about about 3100 houses in Wajima1,200 people in Susa and 960 people in Noto were affected by power outages.

Authorities issued a maximum rain alert for the region until Sunday morning, and some bullet trains linking Tokyo with Japan’s central coast were suspended due to heavy rains that also led to the closure of some highways and roads.
