Republican Donald Trump has vowed not to seek a fourth consecutive term as US president if he loses the November 5 election, saying “that would be it” in an interview published Sunday.

When asked if he sees himself running again in four years if he fails to succeed in his third consecutive White House bid, the 78-year-old former president told Sharyl Attkisson’s “Full Measure”: “No, I don’t think so. I think that’s it. I don’t see it at all. Hopefully, we’ll be successful.”

Trump faces a tight race with Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, with polls showing the two tied in key states that are likely to be decisive in determining the winner, even as Harris has begun to rise in polls nationally.

Trump filed his first bid for reelection in the 2020 election on the same day of his inauguration in 2017 and announced his the last candidate for the White House two years ago, in November 2022.

Trump continues to falsely blame his 2020 defeat by Democratic President Joe Biden on widespread election fraud, and he faces federal and state criminal charges for trying to overturn the election results.

The billionaire denies committing any crime and interprets the accusations as a political attack on him, while accepting increasingly dystopian rhetoric in case of loss in November.

Harris, 59, called the race a critical moment for American democracy as it tries to focus on everyday issues such as family spending and housing.

Asked if the four-year break had helped him regroup and figure out who he could trust as an ally, Trump replied: “It would have been easier if I had done it (…) in a row.”

“But the benefit is that it shows how bad they were in the first place,” he added.

Trump, who spoke with Attkisson at his Florida resort, also said it was “too early” to make deals with people for any position in his White House cabinet if he wins in November. (Reuters)
