Google started implementing Gmail blue check on mobile platformsiOS and Android, expanding the security feature that debuted on the email service last year.

You’re probably familiar with that little check mark that’s used on Twitter, other social networks or web portals as a visual verification mechanism for anything. Although its use is not limited to the security segment, this is where it can have the greatest scope for guaranteeing the legitimacy of information and/or preventing cyber attacks.

The purpose of Gmail’s blue check is familiar: to identify verified senders with a badge displayed to the right of their name. This feature is intended to help users verify that the email they received it comes from a trusted source, not a cybercriminal which uses the service to launch the usual campaigns against phishing, spam or other computer attacks.

Gmail’s blue check is coming to mobile platforms

The technological basis is the same as for the web version that existed until now and includes the use of BIMI, the so-called flag indicators to identify the message which were essential to build trust between email senders and recipients. Essentially, this technology adds another layer of security to Gmail by requiring strong authentication and verification of logos before they are displayed in Gmail as avatars.

To be BIMI compliant, senders should adopt best practices and have their domains and brand logos verified by a third party. Together, this helps build trust between recipients and allows them to easily identify emails from legitimate sources.

Gmail currently displays a certified checkmark on the web for senders who have accepted BIMI with a Registered Mark (VMC). In the coming weeks, users will also see these verified checkmark icons when using Gmail on Android and iOS. The Google app is the only compatible one, and others like Apple Mail or other email apps don’t work.

To say that, in addition to extending Gmail’s blue check to major mobile platforms, the service has released compatibility with Common Brand Certificates (CMC), a new type of BIMI certificate issued by certification authorities.

These new features will be available to all Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google accounts. They will be implemented gradually over the next 15 days and are welcome to improve the security of Gmail, the world’s leading email service, but it goes much further because your accounts are used to access the entire Google ecosystem.
