Cloudflare is launching a new service to strengthen the security of end-to-end encrypted messaging apps like WhatsApp. The tool performs an additional check on the security of public keys.

Cloudflare launches “Plexi” auditing service for messaging apps with end-to-end encryption. The company has conducted an independent audit process with WhatsApp on the core transparency technology. Plexi checks whether the keys of both parties are correct. This process is intended to further ensure the security of the encryption for users.

End-to-end encryption ensures that only the sender and recipient of the messages can see the content, not even the messaging service itself. The security of this process depends on the exchange of public and private keys used to encrypt and decrypt the messages. Cloudflare aims to reduce the risk of tampering with these keys by automatically checking whether the public keys are reliable.

Cloudflare introduces Plexi, a tool that helps verify key transparency. This technology ensures that the public keys used for encrypted communications are authentic and secure. WhatsApp is the first messaging app to use this verification process. This increases confidence that messages are delivered correctly and securely.

To trust

WhatsApp users, especially those who value security, can now rely on third-party verification from Cloudflare. Although many users manually verify the security of their chats using QR codes, for example, the new service does this for them. Plexi checks in the background whether the keys of both parties are correct, providing an additional layer of security.
