To mention Winamp, which I have already mentioned on other occasions, is to relive a time that was neither better nor worse, but which was undeniably special. Between the end of the 1990s and the first decade of this century, we experienced a unique and in every way unrepeatable effervescence, when computing and the Internet became something “minority” (understand what I mean) present in practically everyone’s life.
From day to day websites were on the lips, instant messaging started to become a mass communication channel and Surprisingly, we could suddenly download any song we wanted to listen to for later playback on a PC or copying to an MP3 player in the form of a USB key and a hell of a user interface for listening anytime, anywhere. I don’t know if nostalgia is good or bad, but I think all of us who lived through that period from the inside should be very happy with the experience.
In this context, more specifically in the context of music downloads and also in the context of power tear our music CDs (the days when PCs had a CD player seem very distant to us now, don’t they?), in the days when multihundred-thousand PC speakers became popular (in the peak, the actual value was incredibly lower), Winamp has become the reference music player for Windows. So much so that years after its “disappearance” (although the classic player was available for download all that time) its echoes persist even today.
As a brand though his life became somewhat complicatedjust like we told you in the news about his return, about a year and a half ago. Even today, they are still unable to elaborate their proposal for restoration to the general public, but in their favor they have the quality of an image etched in the memory of many. And in a very smart way, instead of letting the core element die, we learned about a smart move a few months ago to try to bring it back to the fore.
As we already told you in May, Winamp has published the source code of its classic playerIt’s been available on GitHub for a few hours now, and you can find information about it on this page.
The big question, of course, is whether this new push for the classic player, with a call to the community to bring it back to the fore, will fit in a world where local music playback has declined drastically compared to Winamp’s heyday. . Streaming music services have become the main choice for this purpose, and fewer and fewer people store their music collections on their computers. If only for the affection it arouses in those of us who use it intensively in our time, It is worth wishing him all the luck in the world, although it is realistic, it is worth saying that he will need it.
