Netflix’s relationship with advertising can be described as love-hate. Hate in its early days, because until early 2022 the dean of streaming platforms flatly refused to launch a subscription plan that included ads, even if it served to offer a cheaper subscription tier. And personally, I always thought they defended it because they believed that advertising could ruin the experience of using the platform.

However, when disturbing figures began to arriveand when its competitors have already announced plans in this regard, we experienced a real “where I said, I said, I said Diego”. Plus, while the initial announcement of the ad-supported plan pointed to a mid-term horizon (2023 or 2024, at least), they finally hit the accelerator and launched an ad-supported subscription plan at the end. of 2022, which more or less coincided in time with the definitive attack on shared accounts, which the platform also used as a claim on its potential users through social networks.

Be that as it may, 2022 was the year of decisions about changes and 2023 was the year of their arrival and of course the evaluation of its result. And although there were reasons to think otherwise, it is fair to admit that, at least from the point of view of their interests, everything was an impressive success, since the number of subscriptions did not decrease in any fundamental way, there were several additional account contracts, and the plan with advertising, moreover, turned out to be very successful.

Currently, it is therefore possible to negotiate three types of tariffs: standard with advertisements, standard and premium. Until now, however, it was only possible to contract additional accounts, for 5.99 euros per month, additional access. This will change soon and after doing some tests to that effect Netflix is about to offer contracted additional access for standard ad-supported accounts. This option is not yet reflected in the platform information, but it will debut soon, it seems between today and tomorrow.

The price for arranging these additional accounts will be 4.99 euros per monthone less than the other types of subscriptions, but of course, you guessed it, these will also display advertising and will also have more restrictions than the “parent” subscription (that is, the one to hang on to). This would, in other circumstances, make me wonder if it’s worth it to contract these accesses at this price, since the standard plan with advertising costs only 50 cents more. But really, I’ve been wrong so many times when I thought Netflix was wrong that I’d rather wait this time.
