For the first time in more than four decades, the Chinese military launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) with a mock-up warhead at or near full range into the open waters of the Pacific Ocean on the morning of September 25.
The launch was carried out from Hainan Island in the northern South China Sea. The training combat unit of the ICBM fell in the southern part of the Pacific Ocean, not far from French Polynesia, that is, about 12 thousand kilometers from the launch site.
The Chinese Ministry of Defense officially announced the launch of an ICBM as part of the drills, but did not specify the specific type of missile. After the publication of photos, it was revealed that it was a Dongfeng-31AG ICBM launched from a mobile installation.

The last time China launched a full-range ICBM into the Pacific Ocean was in 1980. Since then, they have targeted the country’s domestic training areas in the western part of the country. In subsequent years, missile units of the People’s Liberation Army of the People’s Republic of China launched short-range ballistic missiles into the western part of the sea.
Western analysts believe the launch could be the start of regular missile tests as China continues to expand its nuclear arsenal and increase its number of ICBMs.
