Remember Project Starline? The Google project in its first version to provide lifelike virtual meetings is essentially a super-sized chat box with a 65-inch and 8K TV screen, 14 cameras, 16 infrared projectors, microphones and speakers. The whole thing delivers an incredibly realistic 3D image of the participants in the chat. And that’s exactly what Google is aiming for.
Through this realistic representation, the search giant wants to bring employees closer together, without the need for a headset. The cameras allow, for example, eye contact by looking at the screen – something that is not possible with Zoom or other team meetings via a camera above the screen. The 3D aspect makes the experience much more amazing than the 2D meetings we all have to deal with.
Logitech presented a concept last year, but it never became a marketable model.
With a new version of Project Starline, HP and Google are now moving things up a gear. You can order the Poly solution from Poly today. The special meeting solution is expected to be available in 2025. No price has been announced, but we assume it will be “adequate.”
