Orion, a new (and successful) reformulation of Meta’s augmented reality

With the presentation of Orion that took place a few hours ago, there is no doubt about that Meta just took a hugely innovative step in technology. As you probably already know, the owner of Facebook (which kept the name at the time) acquired Oculus, showing a strong interest in virtual reality devices, which later expanded to other types of visual devices such as smart glasses and headsets.

Part of that bet, yes, is directly related to its plans for Metaverse, a project announced with great fanfare but admittedly not even remotely close to what the tech company wanted to tell us. I’m not going to make firewood out of a fallen tree (or at least prop it up until it’s exhausted so it doesn’t eventually lose its verticality), but for a better understanding it’s important to remember that this is where we come from the reason why Orion is a design that is not only very interesting, but also very intelligent..

With the Orion glasses, Meta combines two families in one device which, although close, have not yet fully converged. On the one hand, we have smart glasses, a market where Meta already has previous experience working with Ray-Ban, and on the other, augmented reality viewers, a market segment that Apple tried to rediscover last year with Apple Vision. So in this new device we find a design similar to the first, but with elements and functions typical of the second.

WITH weighing less than 100 gramsthe engineering team that designed Orion managed to put all the necessary electronic elements into glasses that actually look like glasses. so her crystals are also screenssensors to control the position and movement of the eyes, plus a wristband that allows the device to collect the movements of the user. Together, of course, with the computing capacity necessary to perform certain tasks and the battery that provides autonomy. And as you can see from the pictures, we are talking about a wireless device.

so far yes The date of its arrival on the market has not been determined. On the contrary, Meta will supply the first Orion units to some of its employees and external collaborators, who will assess its performance, identify its weak points and then provide the company with very valuable feedback. And they’ve also made it clear that they know there’s an evolution going on, even pointing out the first points that need to be improved, considering what we understand will be the first version to hit the market.

The Meta is, and we’ve said it many times before, a technology that casts many shadows, but it’s appropriate to take this opportunity to recognize the ability to innovate in a device that aims to be particularly useful in many circumstances. At the moment, as I already indicated, we are talking about a prototype that will already be actively evaluated by many users, but I confess, in accordance with what I indicated at the beginning, that I am waiting for its debut on the market, since it is a device, which I would very much like to at least try.
