He Hurricane Helen It strengthened to a Category 2 storm on Thursday with maximum sustained winds of 95 mph (155 kph) and is expected to increase in strength further as it moves toward Florida, the National Hurricane Center said.
According to the latest NHC bulletin, the system is located 550 kilometers (320 miles) south of Tampa, on the west-central coast of Florida, and 585 kilometers (366 miles) from Apalachicola, in the far northwest of that state.
The Category 2 hurricane, rated at 5 out of 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, threatens strong winds, storm surge and flooding across a large coastal area of the Florida peninsula and is expected to reach major hurricane status tonight.
The NHC called today for “rapid completion of preparations to protect life and property.”
Helen, the eighth named system of this Atlantic hurricane season, is forecast to strengthens to a major hurricane (category 3, 4 or 5).

If it reaches Florida as expected, it will become the fourth to reach U.S. soil this year, following Beryl, Debbie and Francine.
The Atlantic hurricane season, which officially began on June 1, could see above-average activity, with eight to 13 hurricanes expected, four to seven of which will be category I hurricanes, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
