The explosions came as Israel attacked new targets in Lebanon, where its two-week intensified offensive has killed several senior Hezbollah officials and driven hundreds of thousands of people from their homes.

Lebanon’s health ministry said Sunday’s attacks killed at least 105 people, 32 of them in Ain Deleb (south) and 33 in Baalbek Hermel (northeast), and that 14 doctors had been killed in airstrikes over the past two day.

On Sunday, Israel vowed to continue the attack. “We must continue to strike hard at Hezbollah,” said Israeli chief of staff Herzi Halevi.

Israeli drones flew over Beirut throughout the night and much of Sunday, while the loud boom of more airstrikes echoed across the Lebanese capital.

Two weeks ago, Israel sharply stepped up attacks on Hezbollah, killing most of the group’s leadership, in an effort to make its northern areas safe so residents could return to their homes. Israel’s Defense Minister is studying the possibility of expanding the offensive.

Nasrallah’s death was a major blow to the group he led for 32 years, and was followed by more rocket fire from Hezbollah into Israel. Iran said his death would be avenged.

The United States has called for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict in Lebanon but has also allowed its military to strengthen its presence in the region.

Asked about the possibility of avoiding a full-scale war in the Middle East, US President Joe Biden replied: “That’s how it should be.” He also added that he would talk with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In Iran, dignitaries mourned the death of a senior member of the Revolutionary Guard killed alongside Nasrallah, and Tehran called for a UN Security Council meeting on Israel’s actions.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been transferred to safety in Iran following Nasrallah’s death, sources told Reuters.

DEATHS IN LEBANON

Nasrallah’s body was recovered intact from the scene of Friday’s attack, a medical and security source told Reuters. Hezbollah has not said when his funeral will take place.

Nasrallah built Hezbollah into a powerful domestic force in Lebanon and helped make it the linchpin of a network of Iranian-allied groups in the Arab world.

Some Lebanese mourned him on Sunday.

“We have lost a leader who gave us all the strength and faith that we, this small country we love, can turn it into a paradise,” said Lebanese Christian Sophia Blanche Rouillard, carrying a black flag to her work in Beirut.

Israeli attacks have killed more than 1,000 people and injured more than 6,000 in Lebanon over the past two weeks, the Lebanese Health Ministry said, the health ministry previously reported. He did not specify how many of them were civilians and how many were combatants.

In Beirut, several displaced families spent the night on the shores of Zaitunay Bay, a chain of restaurants and cafes on Beirut’s waterfront. On Sunday morning, families with nothing more than a duffle bag of clothes laid out their sleeping mats and made tea.

“They can’t destroy us, no matter what they do, no matter what they bomb, no matter what they bomb, they are displacing people, we will remain here. We won’t leave. “This is our country and we are staying,” said Francoise Azory, a resident who trained in the area.

The UN World Food Program said on Sunday it had launched an emergency operation to deliver food to those affected by the conflict. (Reuters).
