It has long been known that Intel is in difficult waters. Competitors see Intel’s current situation as a unique opportunity. Qualcomm caused a small shockwave in the technology industry by submitting a takeover offer to Intel. Bloomberg writes that Arm also took the risk of acquiring parts of Intel.
Intel’s value has almost halved in a year. This makes companies like Qualcomm and Arm feel like yesterday’s chip giant is within their reach. Qualcomm and Arm also have big ambitions in the PC industry. However, Intel is still worth $96 billion. Arm was only interested in Intel’s product division, but it is unclear whether this was also the case with Qualcomm.
According to Bloomberg, Intel’s top management has shown both Qualcomm and Arm the door. Intel is putting an end to rumors of an impending takeover, at least for now. The company is exploring other options to turn the tide. An old friend wants to give Intel a boost of five billion dollars.
Intel seems to have woken up and announced major reforms about two weeks ago. The (loss-making) foundry division, which houses its own chip factories, would be sold. Intel wants to further reduce costs by laying off its 10,000 employees.
