A ChatGPT subscription could cost 22 euros per month by the end of this year. This price could double again in the next five years.
Today you pay twenty euros per month for a ChatGPT subscription, but that could soon change. The New York Times noted plans to change ChatGPT’s pricing in investor filings. This year there could be a price increase, from 20 euros to 22 euros per month.
Expect to pay significantly more for ChatGPT Plus, especially in the coming years. By 2029, the paid formula could cost up to $44 per month, writes The New York Times. There is no sign that the free version will disappear, but you will have to pay for additional features, capacity and security. For businesses, a paid subscription is required for employees to use ChatGPT securely.
You don’t have to look far for the reason for the alleged price increases. ChatGPT literally costs OpenAI a ton of money. Although OpenAI’s revenue from the chatbot has increased 1,700 percent to $3.7 billion a year since the start of 2023, companies will lose around $5 billion this year, according to analysts at The New York Times.
The cloud infrastructure that OpenAI requires to keep ChatGPT active 24/7 therefore costs the company significantly more money than it generates revenue from the subscriptions. OpenAI also continues to transform from a non-profit research organization to a commercial company, resulting in an exodus at the top of the company. As a result, investors are increasingly measuring it based on its profitability.
As the price of ChatGPT increases, it will become clear how much consumers and business users are willing to pay for the chatbot. A study by Bloomberg from 2023 already showed that many users find the current price of twenty dollars per month too high. Young users (16 to 34 years old) in particular seem unwilling to pay much more for a ChatGPT subscription.
