Motorola announces the ThinkPhone 25, the successor to the ThinkPhone. The device should appeal to a professional audience, but how “business-like” is the ThinkPhone 25 in reality?

The ThinkPhone made its debut in early 2023. The device was aimed at professional users and was intended to serve as an extension of your (Lenovo) laptop. Today Motorola announces a successor, the ThinkPhone 25. The focus is once again on the “business DNA” of the device to appeal to professionals.

Stronger than steel

According to Motorola, business is synonymous with strength. The ThinkPhone 25 is MIL-STD 810H certified, meaning the device meets military-grade durability requirements. Corning Gorilla Glass 7i and aramid fiber, stronger than steel according to Motorola, protect the device from scratches or fall damage.

The IP68 protection rating indicates that the device is resistant to dirt, dust and sand. Even a maximum 30-minute dive into water up to 1.5 meters deep should not result in death. Even extreme weather conditions are not a problem, the manufacturer assures: The device has a temperature range of -30°C to 60°C. You can take the device with you on your business trips with peace of mind. With eSIM support, you can easily complete a temporary data package at your destination.

Motorola increases the resolution of the 6.36-inch screen compared to the previous generation to improve video calls and visuals. A MediaTek Dimensity 7300 should make all of this possible. The processor is certainly not a top-of-the-line processor, but it is a more than powerful chipset that also allows for a significantly lower price.

The device also has a large battery that Motorola says can last up to 34 hours. The charging process takes place with a power of 68 W, so after eleven minutes you should have enough energy for the next working day. The included USB-C charger is powerful enough to charge your laptop, so you only need to carry one charger for all your devices.

Business DNA

The business DNA is not only expressed in the design, but also in the software. Among other things, Motorola points to the presence of Smart Connect, which ensures seamless integration between smartphone and PC. This allows you to easily transfer files between devices or use your smartphone’s camera as a webcam.

Such functionality is not only available on the ThinkPhone 25, but we also see it on high-end phones from Samsung and Apple, for example. ThinkShield and Moto Secure must provide a double belt of defense.

In our opinion, Motorola is missing the point with a 5+5 year update policy. Other brands such as Samsung and Google have now extended their support period to seven years. For a device looking to make its mark in the business market, the ThinkPhone 25 could have excelled in this area.

The ThinkPhone25 from Motorola will be available from mid-November at a recommended retail price of 499.99 euros including VAT. The price therefore drops significantly compared to the first ThinkPhone phone (999 euros). This could position the ThinkPhone 25 as an interesting alternative to business phones, which now often come from the higher price ranges.
