China begins second phase of development of world’s largest single-mirror radio telescope FAST. This project aims to expand the telescope’s capabilities and includes the addition of 24 new mobile radio telescopes, each 40 meters in diameter. The start of the process took place on September 25, the eighth anniversary of its completion. FAST.

FAST Kernel ArrayAs the extension is called, it will use the “quiet” electromagnetic medium available within a 5-kilometer radius around the telescope. This location was chosen due to its remote location and natural topography. When combined into an array, the new telescopes will improve the resolution and detection capabilities of the objects studied.

The aim of this project is to provide scientists with an in-depth study of various areas such as gravitational wave phenomena, fast radio bursts, supernovae and tidal collapse of black holes. FAST Core Array It will also contribute to increased awareness of the situation in space, detection of small objects in the Solar System, communication and control of deep space probes and other areas.

FAST It was completed in 2016 and became fully operational in early 2020. So far, it has discovered more than 900 pulsars, which are rapidly rotating neutron stars. It has been open to research requests from international academics and groups since early 2021.

FAST Core Array will play an important role in expanding opportunities FAST “This will contribute to the in-depth study of various fields of astronomy,” said a representative from China Central Television (CCTV).
