The big Windows 11 2024 update is now available with numerous improvements

Windows 11

Microsoft has started the gradual rollout of the Windows 11 2024 update, also known as version 24H2. The update brings several useful improvements, including improvements to the Start menu, File Explorer, and Settings.

The Windows 11 24H2 update includes a redesigned Start menu with a side panel for Microsoft Phone Link users. This area displays notifications and battery status information for paired phones and provides shortcuts to messages, calls, and photos. For users with an HDR monitor, version 24H2 introduces support for HDR wallpapers and color adjustments can now be easily adjusted via the settings interface.

Improvements in Explorer and Settings

Microsoft has also revised Explorer. The Home section groups current, favorite and shared files into a tabbed view, making it easy to quickly access frequently used documents. Additionally, according to The Verge, the context menus have been updated so that actions like copy, paste, and rename are now more clearly labeled and easier to access. Another useful addition is the ability to create RAR, 7z and TAR files without the need for external software.

The settings interface has been further improved with some long-awaited features. For example, users can now reverse the scrolling direction of the mouse wheel without having to make changes to the Windows registry. Additionally, it is possible to enable improved mouse pointer precision directly from Settings without having to go to the older Control Panel.

In the taskbar, Microsoft has changed the appearance of the time and date display and no longer shows the year. Quick Settings have also been restructured so that all quick actions are visible by default and users can now easily drag and drop them.

Finally, the update brings a new power saving mode that extends the laptop’s battery life. Users can also control what happens when they press the power button or open the laptop.

Developer features and hardware support

For developers, Microsoft is introducing the ability to use the sudo command known from Unix-based systems. This allows developers to easily run elevated commands from a non-elevated console session, which is useful when testing scripts and tools.

The Windows 11 2024 update also brings support for the latest hardware technologies such as WiFi 7 and Bluetooth LE Audio. Additionally, there are performance improvements for the latest AMD processors. Microsoft is also replacing the Mail and Calendar apps with a new Outlook client and introducing a unified Microsoft Teams app for personal and work accounts.

Microsoft is rolling out the update gradually. First and foremost are users with Windows 11 version 22H2 or 23H2. Microsoft is taking a new approach that involves replacing the entire operating system. The update is therefore only available once the device is fully compatible. This prevents problems with, for example, outdated drivers or applications that have not yet been adapted to the new version.

Hopefully Microsoft listened carefully to its beta testers. There are update issues that reward you with a blue screen of death. Microsoft recognizes the problems and is working on a solution. It’s not clear if the publicly available update contains the same bug.
