Microsoft is officially stopping production of HoloLens 2 and starting stock sales of the latest models. A successor is no longer in the works.
End of story for the HoloLens 2. The mixed reality headset was not well received by the general public and Microsoft has therefore decided to stop production. The same thing happened with the first version of the device, whose production stopped back in 2018.
By collaborating with Meta, Microsoft now wants to focus on virtual reality. Those interested can still purchase the HoloLens 2 for $3,500 while supplies last.
HoloLens has been in troubled waters for some time. It had been clear for a long time that there would be no successor because Microsoft did not have a clear vision. Early last year, The Verge reported on a round of layoffs that profoundly affected Microsoft’s mixed reality division. Ultimately, a military version of the HoloLens proved to be a fiasco as it caused headaches for soldiers.
Microsoft is offering support for the headset until the end of 2027. The first generation of HoloLens headsets will receive their final service update at the end of this year. Both models will no longer receive security updates or technical support in the foreseeable future.
