The European Commission requested information on Wednesday from YouTube, Snapchat and TikTok about the parameters its algorithms use to recommend content to users, and its role in exacerbating some systemic risks, including those related to the electoral process, mental health and the protection of minors.
Petitions filed under the Digital Services Act (DSA) “also address platforms’ mitigation measures possible impact of your recommender systems in the dissemination of illegal content, such as the promotion of illegal drugs and incitement to hatred,” the EU Commission said in a statement.

The commission said it had asked TikTok for more information about the measures it has taken to prevent attackers from manipulating the application and reduce risks associated with elections and civil discourse.
EU says tech companies must provide requested information until November 15after which the Commission will decide on further steps, which may include fines.
The EU previously opened non-compliance proceedings under the DSA, which requires big tech companies to do more to combat illegal and harmful content on their platforms due to recommendations proposed Facebook and Instagram, AliExpress and TikTok from Meta.
