The tension between Epic Games and some of the biggest giants of the technology industry is livelier than ever. After a long legal battle against Apple, it filed a new lawsuit against Samsung just a few days ago, stating that setting up its store on the South Korean giant’s devices required too many steps.
Epic Games Store is Epic’s plan to rival the App Store, Play Store and even the Samsung store, and the company does not want any obstacles on this path. In a recent speech at the recent Unreal Fest event, Epic’s CEO revealed his plans for the store. Free third-party games are about to arrive.
Epic Games Store president Steve Allison said at the conference that up to 50 free games will be available in the store before the end of the year. For these early stages of the store, where acquiring new users is important, it is crucial to stick to this bidding strategy with no download costs.
As a minor spoiler, it has been announced that one of the games to be released before the end of the year will be ‘Ark: Ultimate Mobile Edition’. Problem? Studio Wildcard had already announced that this game would arrive on both the Play Store and the App Store, so users wouldn’t have much incentive to download the game from the Epic Games Store, beyond the “fair” commissions given to its developers.
To counter this, Epic announced a release schedule across all platforms; In this program, Epic wants to encourage developers to publish on its store earlier, or at least at the same time as other stores and platforms.
“Apple and Google have a completely broken vision of the world, like limiting what developers can do, imposing more and more restrictions, preventing things like metadatabases from happening, or taxing it to the point where they make all the profits out of IT”. Tim Sweeney
Epic took advantage of the initial speech to strike back at Apple and Google, promising to fight them until it achieved a “decisive victory.”
