Google is working on artificial intelligence software that will allow it to reason like human intelligence. The development, reminiscent of O1, opens a new front in the competition between the technology giant and the fast-growing startup OpenAI.

Several teams at Alphabet Inc., according to sources close to the company. Google has made progress in developing software for AI-based reasoning. These programs are more adept at solving multi-step problems in fields such as mathematics and computer programming.

AI researchers study reasoning patterns to approximate human thought. To achieve this, Google is trying to use a technique known as chain of thought. This technique allows the software to look at a series of related clues and then summarize what seems like the best answer.

Google declined to comment on the initiative, but experts believe the company remains a strong player in the artificial intelligence industry. Experienced artificial intelligence researcher Oren Etzioni noted: “Technically, Google’s capabilities have always been at the highest level. They were just more conservative in their assignments.”

Google and OpenAI are locked in a tight battle for AI dominance, especially after the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Google has taken several steps to regain its leadership, including merging its top research labs into Google’s DeepMind division.

In July, Google introduced AlphaProof, which specializes in mathematical reasoning, and AlphaGeometry 2, an updated version of the geometry-focused model. The models successfully completed four of the six tasks presented at the International Mathematical Olympiad.

At its developer conference in May, Google offered a sneak peek at Astra, an AI-powered assistant that can use the phone’s camera to see the world and answer questions. Google has said that some Assistant features may appear in its flagship Gemini AI model by the end of this year.

“Advanced mathematical reasoning is the key opportunity for modern AI,” Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis wrote on social network X in July.
