Microsoft is making Bing generative search available to all US users. This AI-powered search experience creates a summary based on your searches.

Microsoft introduces Bing Generative Search, the new AI-powered search experience in Bing. After a pilot study in July, Bing is now starting the rollout for US users. Bing’s generative search follows in the footsteps of Google’s similar AI-based search experience. Although the latter is already known to have strange answers, it is not yet clear how Bing will deal with it.

Generative search

“By combining the power of generative AI and large language models (LLMs) with the search results page, Bing’s generative search produces a tailored and dynamic response to a user’s search query,” Microsoft wrote in a blog post.

Microsoft gives the example of a user who searched for ā€œWhat is a spaghetti western?ā€ Bing then shows an AI-generated experience that delves into the genre and its history and adds links to resources.

Bing’s generative search goes beyond simply providing an answer. “It understands the search query, displays millions of information sources, dynamically matches content, and generates search results in a new AI-generated layout to more effectively meet the user’s search intent,” Microsoft said.

Strange answers

Google’s AI-powered search experience was already known for returning strange answers. The search engine gave users questionable suggestions, such as how to put glue on pizza. Google responded to the criticism and considered it to be exaggerated. The company said it is making improvements to its search engine.

How Microsoft wants to prevent this with Bing is not yet clear from the blog. Although Microsoft wants to compete with Google in generative search with Bing, the market share between the two search giants remains large, with Google still having the upper hand.
