During excavations on the northern coast of Peru, archaeologists discovered an ancient throne room with columns of the Sich civilization. On its walls are scenes depicting a powerful woman sitting on a throne.

Experts have already called this hall in Panyamarka a unique find. Archaeologists plan to find references to the settlement in historical records and hope to identify the ruler who lived in the 7th century AD.

Founded in 2018, Pañamarca Archaeological Landscapes is a collaboration between Peruvian and American archaeologists, art historians, and conservators. The National Geographic Society, Columbia University’s Institute of Latin American Studies, and the Avenir Conservation Center at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science are supporting his research and excavations.

This year archaeologists found a colonnaded room containing evidence of use by a high-ranking female leader. The queen’s throne room, with murals depicting her, is another unique find not yet found in the Moche archaeological record.
