Astronomers working at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile have released a new image of the Rosette (or Rose) Nebula. It is located approximately 5000 light-years from Earth, in the direction of the constellation Monoceros. The image was obtained with the help of the dark energy camera (DECam) of the Viktor Blank telescope.

The Rosette Nebula, or NGC 2237, is a massive cloud of ionized hydrogen that spans 130 light-years. The absence of gas can be seen at the center of the dark energy camera image. This is due to massive stars that formed approximately two million years ago. The wind from them created a hole right at the heart of the nebula.

Like all roses, the Rose Nebula will not exist forever: After about 10 million years, radiation from hot young stars in the cluster NGC 2244 will disperse the nebula and it will cease to exist.
