Hackers stole medical information on 53,900 Belgians from Medicheck. The data now appears openly on the Dark Web.
At the end of September, hackers from the Killsec group broke into Medicheck, a company through which employers can book a doctor for sick employees. More than 50,000 documents containing reports from 750 coroners were stolen in the attack.
A “teaser” had previously appeared, but now all the data has appeared on the darknet, writes HLN. They can be viewed there free of charge. Medicheck would like to contact everyone involved as quickly as possible, but the company was severely affected by the attack.
This involves medical data from a total of 53,900 Belgians, both patients and doctors. In addition to names, the reports also contain information about symptoms of the illness, medications prescribed and even whether the doctor believed the patient was “rightfully” absent or not.
Dina De Hack, CEO of Medicheck, confirms to HLN that these are reports intended for the patient. The company also promises to work more closely with the CCB in the future and to undergo quarterly audits.
The Killsec hackers are not up to their task in our country. The group made its presence felt at the beginning of September when it made off with data from Belfius and the insurers DVV and CDA. The attack actually targeted a third-party software provider. It turned out to be Penbox, a company from Brussels. According to sources, Penbox paid a ransom to prevent the data from being leaked.
