Samsung and Google have completely changed the software update game by delivering seven Android updates, and because they are faster at releasing new updates, it’s a no-brainer for many who prefer longer software support. This will definitely affect sales of other Android brands and as a result we have seen many changes in software update policies lately.
Motorola, which has long offered only three Android updates, is now stepping up its game by offering up to five years of Android updates. Motorola Edge 50 Neo, released in August, became the brand’s first phone to receive such an award.
After the Motorola Edge 50 Neo, the brand also announced the Moto G75 and ThinkPhone 25 internationally. Both come with the promise of five generations of Android updates. So Motorola is finally taking a big step in the right direction.
While there’s still a significant gap between the number of Android updates offered by Motorola and Google/Samsung, Motorola’s latest move is a significant improvement over its previous offerings. For example, the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra, one of the company’s most expensive smartphones, promises only three Android updates, while the mid-range Moto G75 promises five Android updates.
Motorola’s software update policy has been a weak point for the brand, especially for high-end phones that are promised only three Android updates. The disappointment was further compounded by the brand’s slow rollout of software updates in recent years. However, the brand seems to have learned from its mistakes as it now offers extended software support on new devices. However, I would be more comfortable buying a Motorola phone if they also improved the software distribution.
Motorola fans will appreciate this brand for longer software support. However, for old Motorola phones, this is not enjoyable at all. They do not receive additional Android updates.
