In recent years, Colombia has seen a noticeable increase in the use of electric vehicles, driven by growing environmental awareness and a desire for sustainable development. This phenomenon is a response to the global need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.

A monthly report from the National Federation of Commercial Traders (Fenalco) and the National Association of Industrialists (ANDI) says sales of vehicles using cleaner technologies continue to rise. In August 2024, electric vehicle (EV) sales increased by 128% compared to the same month the previous year, reaching 664 units sold.

With the increasing number of vehicles circulating across the country, an important question arises: which mobility option is the best option? Taking into account the problems in the electric charging infrastructure.

“While electric mobility represents a critical step towards a sustainable future, we face significant challenges in infrastructure, access to resources and consumer education. However, innovations in charging technology, such as plug-in electric vehicles, offer a promising path to overcoming these barriers and building cleaner, more connected cities. “Says Julio Velazquez, Head of Product at Opel Colombia.

Plug-in electric vehicles

Plug-in electric vehicles (PHEVs) are gaining popularity in Colombia. They offer alternatives that make daily use of electric vehicles easier without additional complications. These vehicles can be charged at the same public and private charging stations as electric vehicles, but they can also be charged at home charging stations using standard outlets.

A prime example is Opel, a 100% German and non-traditional manufacturer, with its Opel Rocks-e model. 100% something different, this plug-in electric mobility solution is a practical and affordable solution that allows owners to enjoy electric driving without the usual hassle of charging. Equipped with a 3-meter cable, Opel Rocks-e can be connected to any 110 V or 220 V outlet, providing a range of up to 75 km.

The Opel Rocks-e is an ideal model to mitigate the environmental crisis caused by global warming, as it is elegant and CO2-free, in line with Opel’s commitment to sustainability and greening. All this is complemented by the fact that it can be used every day regardless of peak and slab, making it an excellent transportation option in major cities of the country.

Although cities such as Bogota, Medellin and Cali have around 250 public charging stations located in strategic locations such as shopping centers and parking lots, many owners install chargers in their homes or workplaces, allowing them to charge their cars. The expansion of this charging infrastructure is not yet optimized to support the growth of electric vehicles in the country.

Taking this into account, plug-in electric vehicles can play a fundamental role in the implementation of green mobility in Colombia. Its growth, along with the overall rise in electric vehicles in the country, represents a positive step towards a more sustainable and greener future. Additionally, expanding charging infrastructure is essential to support this transition and ensure seamless mobility for EV owners.
