With the support of the Latvian Ministry of Culture and Riga Technical University, a group of experts visited Ukraine to 3D scan four cultural heritage sites damaged by shelling by Russian troops.

Latvian experts led by Bruno Delandez, together with their Ukrainian colleagues, carried out a 3D scan of two monuments damaged by the Russian bombardment in Chernihiv, as well as two sacred architectural monuments in Lviv and Kiev. The materials obtained will be used in the development of restoration programs.
“The protection of cultural heritage during the war is a challenge that requires the combined efforts of various parties, both state and civil society, professional communities. It is stated that Latvia has 20 years of experience in documenting emergencies and diagnosing the status of cultural heritage sites during armed conflicts. The Latvian government provided similar technical assistance to Iraq in 2005-2006. The same technology was used to document UNESCO World Heritage sites in war zones in Iraq and Syria.
As reported, about 400 cases of Russian war crimes against cultural heritage and cultural institutions were registered in Ukraine.
