Every website you visit should have a cookie banner. Since the GDPR came into force in May 2018, it has been legally required to query the user’s cookie preferences. How do you start configuring such a banner? We explain that in this how-to. We use Iubenda for the configuration in the portal of the hosting provider Combell.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small files that are stored on your computer when you visit a website and have accepted cookies. They are mainly used to distinguish users from each other. For example, when you log in to a website, that website remembers that you have specifically logged in. Therefore, you do not have to log in again every time you visit. They also collect personal data for marketing purposes. This is where the GDPR comes into play. Websites are not allowed to simply obtain this information from you without permission.

What is legally expected from cookies?

First and foremost, anyone who wants to use cookies on their website simply needs to explain what the cookies do and why they are placed and read or not. The user must also be given the opportunity to consent to the cookies. This happens in a cookie banner, a pop-up that appears on your website.

There are several things you must include on the banner to be legally compliant. You must clearly indicate what type of cookies are used on the website and why. As mentioned above, you should give the user the opportunity to consent to these cookies through a simple option such as checkboxes or buttons. Unless they are exempt cookies, which are functional and analytical cookies. And finally, the banner must be accessible and clearly visible to every user.
