Law enforcement from the United States and Europe liquidated a powerful Russian botnet network

The US Department of Justice, together with law enforcement partners from Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK, liquidated the infrastructure of the Russian RSOCKS botnet, which has hacked millions of computers worldwide.

This was reported by Ukrinform with reference to the Southern District of California attorney’s office.

The RSOCKS botnet, run by Russian cybercriminals, is initially stated to be aimed at a wide range of devices, including industrial control systems, routers, audio and video streaming devices, smart garage door openers and more. Later, it expanded its malware on Android devices and computers.

“The RSOCKS botnet has hacked millions of devices around the world,” said Prosecutor Randy Grossman. – Cyber criminals will not escape justice wherever they work. “Together with public and private partners around the world, we will pursue them relentlessly, using all the means at our disposal to evade threats and bring those responsible to justice.”

According to Special Agent Stacey Moy, the FBI operation and the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Division of the U.S. Department of Justice Criminal Division “destroyed a very sophisticated Russian organization that carried out cyberattacks in the United States and abroad.”

According to the report, a botnet is a group of hacked devices that are connected to the Internet, operated without the knowledge of the owner, and are often used for malicious purposes.
