A new study from SAS shows that governments worldwide are optimistic about generative AI, but actual implementation is lagging behind other sectors.
Despite the enthusiasm among government agencies, SAS research shows that only 44 percent of them are currently using generative AI, compared to 54 percent in other sectors. Still, 60 percent of government respondents believe AI can drive innovation. Governments that are already implementing artificial intelligence are seeing positive results, such as increased employee satisfaction and operational cost savings.
The research shows that there are significant organizational barriers. Government agencies are particularly concerned about resistance to change (52%), more than traditional challenges such as privacy and security (46%). Additionally, the public sector lags behind in policy and governance. Only 52 percent of government organizations have created AI policies, compared to 61 percent in other industries. The government also performs below average in terms of regulations and formal governance frameworks.
There is also a lack of knowledge within the government. Only 35 percent of employees are familiar with AI, well below the average of 46 percent in other industries. At the executive level, only 38 percent of decision makers say they clearly understand the impact of AI on business processes.
Despite the benefits of synthetic data, such as ensuring privacy for sensitive government files, the study found that 32 percent of government decision-makers are not interested in the technology. In contrast, in other sectors it is 23 percent. However, synthetic data can play a crucial role in safely training AI models without revealing sensitive information.
Although government institutions are lagging behind in the introduction of artificial intelligence, the study shows that the willingness to invest is high. 84 percent plan to invest in AI in the coming year, and 91 percent have already committed budgets for this.
