Florida is still recovering from Helen’s devastation

Florida’s densely populated west coast, still recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Helen less than two weeks ago, was bracing for Milton’s landfall in the Tampa Bay area on Wednesday.

The direct impact on the bay would be the first since 1921, when the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area was relatively quiet, especially compared to its current expansion.

“Milton has the potential to be one of the most destructive hurricanes to hit west-central Florida,” the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

Tides of 3 to 4.5 meters are expected.

The agency forecast storm surges of 3 to 4.5 meters along a stretch of coastline north and south of Tampa Bay, which would likely inundate low-lying areas. Rainfall levels are forecast to range from 127 to 254 millimeters or more, threatening flash flooding inland.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said the state 8 thousand National Guard soldiers will be involved and is preparing trucks with supplies and equipment near where the hurricane is expected to make landfall.

“Now is the time to implement your plan (…) but time is running out,” he said at a news conference, where he urged residents to heed warnings from meteorologists and local evacuation orders. (EFE and Reuters)
