Petro is accused of starting a coup because of an investigation into his election campaign

Colombian President Gustavo Petro said in a statement Tuesday that there were alleged irregularities in the financing.

CNE President César Lorduy announced a resolution considering Peter as a candidate; His campaign manager, Ricardo Roa, and other members of his team must answer “for alleged violations of campaign finance regulations” due to allegations of exceeding spending limits and using prohibited sources.

Investigation

The CNE’s decision is in line with a presentation calling for President Peter’s campaign to be indicted for allegedly violating spending limits.

According to a statement read by Lordui, the Plenary Chamber of the CNE “decided by a majority vote to open an investigation and bring charges against the participants in the first and second rounds of the presidential campaign of the “Historical Pact” coalition, represented by the citizens of Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego, candidate; Ricardo Roa Barragan, campaign manager; Lucy Ady Mogollon Alfonso, Treasurer; Maria Lucy Soto Caro and Juan Carlos Lemus Gomez, auditors.”

According to CNE, Petro’s presidential campaign did not report to the organization in its reports the contributions to the first electoral round, held on May 29, 2022, from the Colombian Federation of Educators (Fecode), the Polo Democrático Alternativo party and the Syndical Union. Obrera (USO), as well as expenses for paying election witnesses and propaganda, among other things.

As for the second round of elections held on June 19, 2022, Peter’s campaign also allegedly violated the “spending limit by 1,646,386,773 pesos (about $389,541 today),” according to CNE.

The money allegedly came again from donations from the Colombia Humana party and the USO, and is believed to have been spent on, among other things, paying for the party celebrating his presidential election, election witnesses, and air travel. EFE
