The Microsoft Surface Duo 2 has received its latest security update. Microsoft will end support for the device, which has only received one true Android update in its entire life, at the end of this month.

The Microsoft Surface Duo 2 has probably received its latest security update. Microsoft will officially end support for the device on October 21st. Three years after launching the original foldable device, Redmond’s comeback to the smartphone market is coming to an end.

The Surface Duo 2 was never a huge success and Microsoft chose to treat support poorly for the expensive device. Despite priced at around $1,500 at launch, the Surface Duo 2 only received one Android update: from Android 11 to Android 12L. That’s one less than the original Surface Duo, which launched on Android 10 and also failed on Android 12L.

Even by Android standards this is very bad. Two to three system updates are the minimum; devices in the premium price range usually receive more. Anyone who has bought a Surface Duo or a Surface Duo 2 may feel a bit cheated.

Microsoft hoped to regain a role in the smartphone market through an original form factor and integration with Windows. After a mediocre performance from the first generation of Surface Duo devices, Redmond quickly had enough of this new plan. Anyone who believed in Microsoft’s plans only received the bare minimum of software support in the form of promised security updates.

Microsoft positions itself as an unreliable partner, at least when it comes to phones. If the manufacturer tries to enter the smartphone market again in the future, remember this story and stay away.
