With Android 15 on the brink of release, you want to make sure your device is fully ready for the update during deployment. Checking the software update policy is one thing, but there are a few more things to consider.

Android 15 is an exciting update that will bring tons of new features such as anti-theft lock, private space, full app archiving support, satellite connectivity and more. There will also be new features and improvements as part of the smartphone manufacturer’s custom shell.

While Google Pixels have not yet received the stable Android 15 update, the Chinese brand Vivo surprised everyone by releasing the new software early. And recently, Nothing joined the party with the release of Nothing OS 3.0 open beta based on Android 15. Other brands will come soon.

Are you excited for Android 15? Check these points to make sure your device is ready for the update.

#1. Check software update policy

This is the first and most important step to ensure your device is compatible with the next version of Android. Since many brands have not yet released the list of Android 15 compatible devices, you can check your device’s software update policy on the official website to see how long it will be supported.

If your device is eligible for the Android 15 update, it would be logical to wait for the update, otherwise you can upgrade to a newer model.

#2. Make sure the software is up to date

Your device must have the latest software installed to be eligible for the update. This is also recommended for smoother and more stable running of the software. Sometimes you may see new features and significant improvements.

You can manually check for updates every few days or enable automatic updates to keep your device working (check #6 for steps). You will be notified when an update is available and then install it.

#3. Update all programs

This is an important step that many people overlook. When a new version of Android is announced, developers must make the necessary changes to make apps compatible with the latest version of Android.

To reduce the risk of app crashes or errors, update all apps before installing the Android 15 update package.

#4. Make sure the battery has enough power

Major software updates such as Android 15 may take longer. Therefore, if your device shuts down while installing an update, your device may end up with an incomplete installation and possibly corrupted files. The device may not work properly and may sometimes lead to a locked state, rendering the phone unusable.

Installing software updates is a resource-intensive task that drains your battery faster. Therefore, it is highly recommended to charge your device to at least 50% before installing the update.

#5: Make sure you have enough memory

For a smoother installation on a major update like Android 15, we recommend keeping at least 10 GB of free space.

Installing a software update may cause data loss. Although it doesn’t happen most of the time, there is a possibility and if you have important data on your device, you won’t leave it alone. Therefore, backing up your important data is a very important step.

You can back up your data to a physical device such as a flash drive or hard drive, or to cloud storage such as Google Drive, Mega or Dropbox. Also, don’t forget to backup your messages, Wi-Fi passwords, home screen and other important data.

#7. Turn on automatic updates

Manually checking for updates every few days is time consuming and requires forgetfulness. To protect you from this, every Android device has the option to enable automatic updates. You will be notified when an update is available.

Open the Settings app, go to Software Update, and turn on automatic updates if it’s not already on.

My Samsung Galaxy S21 FE is receiving update notifications with a delay of a day or two. This may be because the automatic update checker is not working in real time. Therefore, I watch trusted sources to see if there is a new software update and then manually check for updates once or twice a day. Most of the time I get the update on the first try.

What can be expected from Android 15?

Android 15 lacks major design elements, but there’s still something to look forward to. Some of the key features of the new operating system are:

1. Satellite connection support

Android 15 introduces support for satellite communications, allowing users to send text messages even if there is no cell tower nearby, as long as they have access to open skies. However, this feature will most likely require a special chip and carrier support.

The operating system supports SMS, MMS and RCS applications to use the satellite link function.

2. Anti-theft lock

This is one of the key features of Android 15, which automatically locks the device when it detects movement such as someone pulling your phone from your hand. This feature is designed to prevent others from stealing your data.

Even more exciting, thieves will have a hard time selling the device because they won’t be able to set it up again without knowing your device or Google account details.

3. Private space

Android 15 introduces Private Space to keep your private apps in a safer place. For an extra layer of protection, you can set a different password for the private area.

Many smartphones already have a similar feature under different names, such as Samsung’s Secure Folder and OnePlus’ Private Vault.

4. Shortcut to a pair of programs

Android 15 lets you create shortcuts for a pair of apps to use in split-screen mode. For example, you can create a shortcut for YouTube and Notes. Although this is a small change, it will save time for those who spend most of their time using multiple applications in split-screen mode.

5. Program archiving

Android phones already support app archiving, which allows users to uninstall an app while preserving user data. But this only happens through the Google Play Store. This feature is available in the upcoming version of Android 15. This means it will also support apps installed outside of the Google Play Store.

The application archiving function is designed to save memory by archiving applications that you do not want to use for a short time. By unzipping the program, you can continue where you left off without losing any data.

6. Partial screen recording

When you share your screen, the other person can see everything on your screen, including information about apps that you don’t want others to see. Android 15 solves this problem by introducing partial screen sharing.

This new feature allows you to share or record the screen of a single app instead of the entire screen.

7. Charging notifications

Although not confirmed, Android 15 may introduce a notification recovery feature designed to prevent users from being distracted by too many notifications. This feature reduces the amount of notifications from the same app.
