Several people died Wednesday in a retirement community in St. Lucie County, on Florida’s east coast, after a tornado that preceded the arrival of Hurricane Milton destroyed their homes, authorities confirmed to local media.
The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Department told WPTV that “multiple deaths” occurred at the Spanish Lakes Country Club, which houses senior citizens.
St. Lucie Chief Sheriff Keith Pearson said it was unclear how many people were killed and that emergency crews began a search and rescue operation at each of the affected homes before the rains began in Milton.
“We have dozens of homes in St. Lucie County that have had damage, some catastrophically,” St. Lucie County spokesman Eric Gill told WFLA.
