A digital version of your passport and ID card on your smartphone? The European Commission wants to make this option available from 2030.

The European Commission wants to digitize passports and identity cards from 2030, announced EU Commissioner Ylva Johansson. The digital documents do not represent a complete replacement for existing travel documents as their use is not mandatory. The documents contain information contained in the chip of passports and ID cards, as well as a photo of the cardholder, but not a fingerprint.

Easier travel within and outside Europe

“This makes it easier and faster for customs staff. You can send your digital passport in advance and customs staff can then carry out the checks,” says Johansson. At the border, the traveler’s face is compared with the photo on the digital document.

Every year 600 million people come to the European Union, which entails a lot of work in border controls. Digitalization would tighten security measures in the Schengen area. This makes it easier for border guards to intercept crime and terror suspects.

The proposal has not yet been approved by the member states and the European Parliament, ANP knows. If they agree, development of the technology can begin. There is already a digital wallet in Belgium where you may be able to store important documents and certificates such as your eID or driving license. This app may also be useful when traveling.
