In the third quarter of 2024, 2.4 percent fewer PCs were shipped than in the same quarter of the previous year, reports IDC. Factors such as rising costs and increasing inventory initially increased sales, but now led to delays.
A total of 68.8 million desktops and laptops were shipped in the third quarter of 2024. That is 2.4 percent less than the 70.5 million in the same quarter of the previous year. This number is significantly higher than the figure of 64.9 million in the second quarter. Sales increased due to higher costs and additional efforts to replenish inventory. This resulted in delayed sales in the third quarter of 2024.
However, demand for PCs continues to increase, especially in the entry-level segment. Commercial interest also remains strong outside of education. Many companies are upgrading their PCs as Windows 10 is being phased out. New AI PCs like Microsoft’s Copilot Plus PCs and similar models with CPUs from Intel and AMD are expected to drive demand for high-end PCs.
Lenovo and HP remain the strongest players in the PC market and continued to increase their market share in the third quarter of 2024. Although Acer sells less than the other major vendors, it is not as badly affected as Apple. Apple recorded a significant year-on-year decline of 24.2%. Acer, on the other hand, was even able to achieve small growth of 4.4%. Dell fell slightly by 4%, but ASUS stood out with strong growth of 10%
