Pope Francis asked the question this Sunday “respect” for UN peacekeepers in Lebanon, After recent Israeli attacks, he again called for a ceasefire in the Middle East and said war was a defeat “especially for those who consider themselves invincible.”

“I once again ask for an immediate ceasefire.” and that “the path of diplomacy and dialogue be followed on all fronts to achieve peace,” the pontiff prayed at the end of Sunday’s Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square in front of thousands of the faithful.

The Pope demonstrated his “closeness” to “all the population involved, Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, “Where,” he said then, “I ask that UN peacekeepers be respected.”

He also assured that Prays “for all the victims, for the displaced, for the hostages, who I hope will be immediately released,” and expressed the hope that “this great and useless suffering, born of hatred and revenge, will soon end.”

Francis was referring to recent Israeli attacks on UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon (UNIFIL), which have left five peacekeepers wounded in the past two days.

The attacks have received international condemnation and last Friday the government leaders of Spain, France and Italy expressed their outrage and described them as “unjustifiable” and “serious violation” of Israel’s obligations and international humanitarian law.
