Europa Clipper, NASA’s $5 billion mission to explore the salty ocean beneath the ice of Jupiter’s moon Europa, will launch on Monday aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. Liftoff is scheduled for 12:06 ET (16:06 GMT) from Pad 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center near Cape Canaveral, Florida.

“Clipper is NASA’s first spacecraft dedicated to investigating the ocean world beyond Earth,” NASA Deputy Administrator Jim Free told reporters during a briefing Sunday evening, Oct. 13. NASA is currently scheduled to launch the Europa Clipper mission aboard the SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket at 12:06 ET (16:06 GMT) on Monday, October 14. The mission will have a 15-second launch window, and SpaceX will be committed until the end of that window. There is a 95% chance of good weather at launch.

SpaceX had originally planned to launch the Europa Clipper on October 10, but postponed the flight due to the approach of Hurricane Milton, which wreaked havoc on Florida days before the launch attempt and left millions in the state without power. The storm damaged parts of the Kennedy Space Center, but the center reopened a few days later to continue preparations for the Europa Clipper launch.

“The SpaceX and NASA teams did a great job keeping the hardware safe,” Free said during the briefing, adding that his heart goes out to everyone affected by previous Hurricanes Milton and Helen. NASA’s Europa Clipper is expected to last about 10 years from start to finish; The first 5.5 years will be spent traveling 1.8 billion miles (2.9 billion kilometers) traveling to Jupiter and Europa. However, the launch will take just over an hour from spacecraft launch to spacecraft deployment, followed by the six-hour process of deploying the solar panels.

If all goes well, the Europa Clipper will fly past Mars in March 2025 and then fly to Earth in December 2026, receiving gravitational support from each planet. These encounters will enable the probe to arrive at Jupiter on April 11, 2030. The mission is managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California.

Once at Jupiter, the spacecraft will spend the next four years making a series of flybys of Europa to study the moon’s icy ocean with a suite of nine different instruments and experiments, each aimed at understanding the salty ocean water underneath. While radar probes the depths of this ocean, other instruments will measure water clouds detected on Europa by the Hubble Space Telescope.
