Should we call HPE a networking company from now on? Following the acquisition of Juniper Networks, the company will have a solid network portfolio.

A question time with HPE CEO Antonio Neri is never boring. Neri was a guest at the 2024 XChange Best of Breed conference in Atlanta this week. There he spoke about the direction of his company, which, according to Neri, is increasingly shifting towards network business. “We are essentially becoming a network company. And I think that’s the big opportunity to offer customers a more modern, AI-driven experience at the network level.”

Neri points to the acquisition of Juniper Networks. This was announced in January, but it took some time for HPE to get the green light from regulators to move forward with the plans. Neri confirms that all the paperwork is almost done.

This will give a big boost to HPE’s networking division. “Once the transaction is completed, the network business will account for one-third of the company’s revenue and fifty percent of its operating profit,” Neri said.

No overlap

And what about Aruba Networks, the networking subsidiary that was acquired by HPE in 2015? Neri is convinced that both companies will not get in each other’s way. “People get a little confused sometimes, but there’s actually no overlap. We have built a nice portfolio with HPE Aruba, but at the top of the company. Now we can serve all market segments.”

During HPE Discover, Neri emphasized that Juniper Networks is the next piece of the puzzle in completing HPE’s edge-to-cloud strategy. He repeated these words in Atlanta: “This is the first time in our history that we own all the intellectual property, from the silicon to the infrastructure to the operating system, to the software services and the security, to power this modern edge-to-edge Cloud network structure”.

Cisco

He also makes no secret of who Neri sees as his opponents in the networking industry. “So don’t think that HPE and Juniper are at odds with each other. It’s HPE plus Juniper compared to the different architectures we have in the market with Cisco. We’re becoming a networking company, something that Cisco has probably forgotten about by now.”

Essentially we will become a network company. Something Cisco probably forgot.
