On October 15, the “Changzhen-6A” launch vehicle launched the second group of 18 satellites of the “Thousand Sails” constellation of low-orbit broadband communications devices group. China continues to build its own version of Starlink. To implement the plan by the end of 2025, 648 first-generation satellites will be deployed for regional coverage at an altitude of more than 1,000 kilometers, 108 of which will be launched in 2024.

A further 648 second-generation satellites will be added to these at similar altitudes for global coverage in 2026-2027, and more than 14,000 satellites will be deployed by 2030.

The creation of the “Thousand Sails” constellation is closely watched by experts from all over the world, because, despite successful launches, the upper stage of the Chinese “Changzhen-6A” rocket, which delivered the first batch of satellites on August 6. The “Thousand Sails” constellation heading into space collapsed in orbit. This created a cloud that likely contained more than 700 pieces of orbital debris.
