OpenAI has announced the availability of the ChatGPT app for Windows. It is a preliminary version and for ChatGPT Plus, Team, Enterprise and Edu clients, but it is the first progress before “the most complete experience” which will arrive later, by the end of the year.

The public launch of the OpenAI chatbot was a turning point in AI applications for mass use. Since its first web-accessible version, others have been launched, such as an iOS and Android app, and in the same year a macOS app, first exclusively for Plus subscribers and later for everyone. Now it’s Microsoft’s turn.

ChatGPT for Windows

“With the official ChatGPT desktop app, you can chat about files and photos… This app brings you the latest improvements to the OpenAI model, including access to o1-preview, our latest and smartest model”, describe.

ChatGPT for Windows can be run on most computers running Windows and above, but with some limitations compared to other ChatGPT clients. For example, it doesn’t yet support voice, including advanced voice mode, and some integrations with OpenAI’s GPT store don’t work either.

Like the macOS desktop version, the Windows version lets you minimize it to a small companion window along with other apps while you work. You can open a Spotlight-like ChatGPT message window with Alt+Space, upload files and photos for AI analysis, sync conversations with your OpenAI account, have it summarize documents, and create images with the DALL generator. – E 3.

Dedicated app or Copilot?

You might be wondering why you should use ChatGPT instead of the Copilot assistant built into Windows. And it’s a matter of personal preference. ChatGPT and Copilot use the same LLM suitebut Copilot is flooded with Microsoft integrations that can be useful or extremely annoying depending on your workflow.

You can download ChatGPT for Windows from the Microsoft Store or from the OpenAI download page (which will redirect you to the Microsoft Store). Note that the app is in preview and requires a Plus, Enterprise, Team or Edu subscription. The rest of the users will have access to the version by the end of the year, OpenAI promises, and we assume that with a version that includes macOS features.
