The original Google Meet app, formerly Hangouts, is definitely dead and buried. Google decided to discontinue Hangouts two years ago.

Google Meet no longer exists. Don’t worry, we’re not talking about the business communication app within the Google Workspace offering, but rather the “original app”. After Google cleaned up its communication apps two years ago, there were two versions of Google Meet for a while.

The spirit of Hangouts

In early 2020, Google announced the development of a unified communications app and continued these plans two years later. The result was Hangouts, Google Duo was renamed to the current Google Meets. But the ghost of Hangouts still hovers around in his form Google Meet (original)-App.

A different logo had to distinguish both versions from each other. Google Meet was significantly more extensive, but the original version also worked for video calls with a link. Google now decides to put an end to the possible confusion between two Meet applications and grants the original version and Hangouts eternal rest.

Anyone who tries to open the application will receive a message saying that you can no longer use it. To be clear: Google Meet will continue to exist and Google regularly introduces new functionality. However, Meet cannot currently compete with Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
