According to Mark Gurman BloombergSome Apple employees believe the company’s own generative AI technology enables: Apple Intelligenceis more than two years behind industry leaders.

Writing in the latest Power On newsletter, Gurman’s sources at Apple tell him that the company’s own research suggests future AI features lack the “wow factor” of competing technologies currently offered by companies like Google, OpenAI and Meta.

For example, Apple’s internal research reportedly shows that OpenAI’s ChatGPT is 25% more accurate and can answer 30% more questions than the new Siri. Of course, Apple has already acknowledged this, given that part of its strategy involves partnering with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its operating systems, giving users the ability to use more productive AI assistance if they want.

Despite this disruption, Gurman notes, Apple is in a unique position to preside over a vast ecosystem of tightly integrated devices, giving it the advantage of quickly introducing new technologies across its product line. This could be beneficial, as the company is trying to close the AI gap with its competitors and its track record of successfully entering new markets suggests that this should not be ignored.

Apple’s latest iPhone 16 series supports Apple Intelligence, as do Mac computers and, following last week’s announcement of the iPad mini 7, the iPad lineup (except for the entry-level model). The first AI features are expected to appear on these devices next week.

Meanwhile, the new Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone SE 4 is scheduled to be released in March, and the entry-level AI-enabled iPad is also planned to be released later that year. Additionally, Apple is working to bring the technology to the Vision Pro, and given that AI alert reports could be coming to the Apple Watch, Gurman predicts that “nearly every Apple device with a screen” will be supported by Apple Intelligence by early 2026.
